What a night! Bucky and John Pizzarelli met up with Michele Lee at Patsy's!

This was really great - last Thursday, Deana Martin had a big show at Paul Stuart, over on Madison and 45th. She was singing classic songs from her father as well as some of her own, and to complement her singing, she had some of the official Rat Pack band members - Bucky and John Pizzarelli! After a wonderful show, Bucky and John headed over to Patsy's and met up with Michele Lee!

Sal with Bucky and John Pizzarelli, at Paul Stuarts.

Sal with Deana Martin.

Sal, Bucky, and Michele Lee, having a laugh at Patsy's!

It just goes to show you that you'll never know what kind of night it's going to be in NYC - especially when you're eating at Patsy's!

How to cook Eggplant Parmigiana, "Patsy's Style!"

Ever had a perfectly cooked eggplant parm? With just the right balance between crispiness and tenderness, oozing with sauce and cheese, it's a delicious dish! If your mouth is watering just thinking about this, then you're in luck, because we've got the recipe right here!

Eggplant Parmigiana

Serves 4

  • 2 medium eggplants (about 1 pound each)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, for dredging
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup fine dry breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 3 cups (24 ounces) Patsy’s Tomato Basil Sauce
  • 8 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 375º F. Trim the eggplants, peel and cut into 1/4 inch-thick rounds. Dredge each eggplant slice in flour, dip into egg mixture and coat with breadcrumbs. Heat olive oil in a large skillet and sauté the eggplant (a few slices at a time) on both sides until they are golden brown. Drain on paper towels and add salt and pepper, to taste. Divide the ingredients in half. Arrange a layer of eggplant slices on the bottom of a greased heatproof casserole. Cover with 1 1/2 cups of Patsy’s Tomato Basil Sauce, 4 ounces of mozzarella cheese, and 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese. Repeat the procedure, creating a second layer with the remaining ingredients. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.

For style points, add basil as a garnish!

If you felt inspired while reading this recipe (or just want to look at pictures of more food), then the Patsy's Cookbook is for you! It's packed with dozens of recipes for classic dishes just like this. If you're interested, you can pick it up from amazon or our own website.

Interested in trying this recipe for yourself? It uses Patsy's Tomato Basil sauce. While any sauce can work, experience has shown us that our Tomato Basil sauce is the ideal choice. If you don't have a jar at home, not to worry - the sauce is also sold right on our website, as well as in many retail locations around the country, from Wal-Mart to Kings. If you have any questions about where to find the sauce, where to get the cookbook, or how to follow this recipe, please, let us know!

Sal's appearing on the Today Show on October 1st!

Hi everyone,

We've got some exciting news! Once again, Sal will be making an appearance on the Today Show. On October 1st, between 10 am and 11 am (Eastern Time), you'll be able to catch him! If you can't watch the show live, it's definitely worth taping/TiVoing, because his visits to the Today Show are always great.

He's become something of a regular there over the years, and he always makes a point of cooking something delicious. This time will be no exception, as he's preparing to make a vegetarian Napoleon dish that's going to be seriously impressive.

Don't you just want to dig in?

If you can't wait for the show to try this, then you're in luck - we've got the full recipe right here:

Vegetable Napoleon

Serves 10

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 medium eggplant (about 1 ¼ pounds), ends trimmed, peeled. And cut into ¼ inch-thick slices
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 2 medium zucchini (about 1 pound), ends trimmed, sliced into ½ inch rounds
  • 1 pound spinach, washed and trimmed
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for greasing pan
  • ½ cup dry bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 cups Tomato Sauce
  • 2 Roasted Red Bell Peppers, cut into ¼ inch strips
  • 1 pound mozzarella. Diced into small cubes
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh basil

Spread the flour on a large plate. Lightly coat the eggplant slices with flour and then dip in the beaten eggs. Heat ¼ cup of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high flame. Fry the eggplant slices, turning to cook on both sides, until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Remove. Place on paper towels to drain, and reserve.

Add the remaining ¼ cup of oil and the zucchini to the skillet and sauté until just lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Remove zucchini and place on paper towels to drain.

Meanwhile, bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a pot fitted with a steamer insert. Chop the spinach, add to the steamer, cover tightly, and steam for 3 minutes. Drain and press out as much water as possible. Add more oil to the skillet if necessary. Over medium heat, sauté the steamed spinach with the minced garlic until the spinach is just tender, about 3 minutes. Remove from the skillet and pace on paper towels to drain.

Preheat the over to 400 F

Butter the bottom and insides of a nonstick loaf pan, about 9x13 inches. Lightly coat with the bread crumbs.

While building the Napoleon, season each vegetable layer with salt and pepper. Begin by placing a layer of the cooked eggplant atop the bread crumbs. Spoon ¼ cup (4 tablespoons) of tomato sauce over the eggplant, followed by a layer of the cooked zucchini, the red pepper, spinach, and mozzarella. Moistening each layer with some sauce and a sprinkling of Parmigiana-Reggiano, bread crumbs, and basil. The final layer should be eggplant, finished with sauce.

Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Or until all ingredients are heated through. Allow to cool, then refrigerate for at least 6 hours (preferably overnight) to firmly set before unmolding.

When ready to serve, remove the foil and run a knife along the inside edge of the pan. Place a serving dish on top of the pan and quickly invert. Spoon additional sauce around the Napoleon and sprinkle generously with grated cheese before serving.

If it comes out like this, you did it well!

Feel like you need a bit more guidance with the recipe? Not to worry - just watch Sal on October 2nd, and you'll see how a pro makes this! And, as always, if you've got any questions or feedback, let us know; leave a comment, write an e-mail, send us a message on Facebook. We'd love to hear how this recipe works out for you!

Sharing another great article

Hey everyone, just writing a quick post to share another really nice article about Patsy's. This one came from the spring issue of Promenade magazine, and it's a great review of the restaurant. Click here to read it!

One of the best things about this review is that it features one of my favorite meals at Patsy's - Chicken Contadina!

When I was growing up, I ate this at least once a week!
It's one of those dishes that really sets Patsy's apart from other restaurants, because there's something so authentic and hearty about it. It's chopped up chicken, sauteed in garlic and mixed with peppers, potatoes, sausage and mushrooms. It sounds simple, but it tastes so good!

If you'd like to see more pictures of Patsy's food, or just to hear someone besides me say some kind words about the restaurant, definitely check out their review!

Patsy's has re-opened!

Hi everyone,

Another quick update - although the storm has taken its toll on us, we've been able to re-open. Not all of our employees have been able to make it in since so many of them rely on the subways and buses to get to work, but we have enough that we're able to open both kitchens and dining rooms.

These are tough times, so if you're stuck in the area or you find yourself without power, and you want some good food to warm you up and some friendly faces to comfort you, please, stop by. We'll be here for you.

Have you tried our exclusive fall dishes?

At Patsy's, we love celebrating, regardless of the occasion! So this year we've reinstated an old favorite for the months of autumn, and we're also introducing something new to spice things up!

Our delicious pumpkin tortelloni is back for Fall!

First off, we've once again got our pumpkin tortelloni firing up in the kitchen. This has become a favorite over the years, and it's easy to see why - we fill the tortellini with only the freshest, juiciest pumpkins, and it actually adds a surprisingly good taste. There's a hint of sweetness and a lot of heartiness.

On top of that, we cover it with a velvety layer of a special cream sauce that's also got tha same sweetness to it. All in all, it's a dish you really can't miss, so if you're in the area be sure to book a reservation soon.

As far as what's new, we're trying something different this year! As you know, we've always offered both chocolate and raspberry Tartuffo for dessert, but we've also introduced pumpkin in honor of the season!

If you love Tartuffo, you've gotta try this flavor!

While we're on the subject of Fall, have you been celebrating Patsy's "Pizzaiola Month"? You still have a few days left to take advantage of the savings - from now until the end of October, shipping is free on any and every jar of Pizzaiola that you order! On top of that, we've got recipes on the site all about how best to use it.

So enjoy the rest of October... and take care of yourselves during this hurricane!

Thanks to our customers!

It's always exciting when a big celebrity or an instantly recognizable face walks through our doors, but we're just as happy when we see one of our long-standing customers. Even brand new people who've never eaten at Patsy's before are always welcome guests, and since we've made a point of designating several blog posts to the many celebrities that have dined with us, we thought it'd be appropriate to acknowledge some of our other beloved customers.

First up, we've got a great picture from long-time customer Chris Khan and his family!

Thanks for a great dinner and night Sal!!  Hope to see you again soon. Roll Tide! ~ Chris Kahn

Next is a charming little photo courtesy of some visitors from Tennessee!

The dinner before the show was the highlight of our trip.

~ Vivian and Terry from Nashville

Finally, we've got a great little story from Michael Mott, a first time customer who wanted to share his experience!

I am by no means a famous actor and or singer, but my father, his wife and my girlfriend felt like royalty for our recent dinner on September 19th of 2012.  We had called Patsy’s last minute, while on vacation, at about 7:30pm and were told to come on over, as it was my father’s 70th birthday.

Our family comes from northern Italy (Austria in the day) and we wanted some good food while in town.  A friend of the family suggested Patsy’s and so my father was keen on going there!  To make a long story short, we showed up last minute after calling and we were seated promptly upstairs.  Not sure if it’s a split staff but the guys upstairs were wonderful, sadly I cannot remember any names!  I did take this picture with this wonderful gentleman:
Long story short, Patsy’s is our first stop now when we hit NYC (that and staying at the Warwick) and will remain a lasting memory.  Great food, great wine and great friends met!

Michael Mott

Got a story that you'd love to share about your relationship with Patsy's? Maybe you've got a great photo of you and your family with Sal from a great vacation you had in NYC, or perhaps you've been coming into the restaurant since you were a child and just want to share some fond memories. Don't be shy! We'd love to hear from you. E-mail us, and we'll make sure you're also a star on one of our next blog posts!

Happy Birthday, Uncle Joe!

It's amazing how fast a year goes by - it feels like only a short time ago that I was saying happy birthday to Uncle Joe for his 79th birthday, and now it's his 80th!

Uncle Joe taking a quick picture in the kitchen. He loves that pink tie!

This is a big deal for Uncle Joe, as it represents a huge milestone in his life. He's been through a lot in his 80 years, from his childhood where his parents were still struggling to make a living in America, to his adulthood where he saw Patsy's grow and flourish into a cornerstone of NYC's treasured restaurant industry.

Uncle Joe with his beloved wife, Aunt Rose. They've been happily married for many years, and they're looking forward to many more!

Now he's an extremely proud father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and friend to the many, many lives he's touched over the years. It's an incredible testament to his impact on not only the restaurant, but also the city, that people still flood into the restaurant who greet him with a friendly "Joey! How you doin'?"

The truth is, there wouldn't be a Patsy's today without Uncle Joe. When Patsy himself was a young man trying to save up enough money to fund his American dream, a little six year old Joey took a job in a pastry shop in Little Italy to help the family save up money. He had several odd jobs in the pastry shop, and I remember him telling me that one of the job requirements was knowing how to whistle. This wouldn't seem like a necessary skill for selling pastries, but the owner of the shop wanted Uncle Joe to constantly be whistling whenever he couldn't see him - that way, he knew he wasn't eating anything in the store!

Uncle Joe with his son (Sal, of course!) and his grandchildren Joey and Peter.

As young Joey began to grow into a man, he became more and more instrumental in the dream that Patsy was fulfilling. Uncle Joe helped out at the Sorrento (the restaurant that Patsy co-owned before Patsy's), and when it finally came time for Patsy to start his own restaurant, Uncle Joe was a full-time chef. Having a chef you trust in a brand-new restaurant is easily one of the most important keys to staying around for a long time, so the fact that Patsy's has been open for so many decades is a testament to all the great food that Uncle Joe produced in those early years. (And make no mistake, he's still got it!)

Uncle Joe with one of his grandsons, Chef Peter. Peter is proudly continuing the tradition that Uncle Joe started of being a Scognamillo Chef who works the position that Patsy himself once worked!

As time went on and Patsy's stood tall in a city of giants, Uncle Joe's role has shifted. Where he was once the head chef of a kitchen fulfilling packed pre-theater dinner crowds on a nightly basis, he's now in the front, warmly greeting people and showing them to their tables. (Pre-theater dinner crowds are still busy, though!) He used to train new, untested chefs, eager to learn enough of Patsy's recipes so that they could stake out a career there, but now he mentors his young grandson Peter, paving the way for a fourth generation of Scognamillo chefs at Patsy's. And as he was once a young boy full of dreams and ambitions, he is now the protector and patriarch of our family.

Uncle Joe with his older (and much loved!) sister Anna.
Uncle Joe, thanks so much for everything you've done for our family, for Patsy's, and for people everywhere who want great Italian food! We all love you, and wish you a very happy birthday and many more, as you continue to enjoy the legacy that you helped create all those years ago.

Staying up late with Brad Paisley!

The other night, just as we were getting ready to close our doors, we had a nice surprise - Brad Paisley showed up with a bunch of guests, and they were all hungry!

Whether you're a first-time customer or a great country music singer, we're always happy to feed anyone that comes in hungry!
He'd shown up with his band-mates and some relatives right around the time we were closing, but since he's in the middle of a tour and has to be very busy, we totally understand and didn't mind at all keeping the restaurant open for him.

There was a bit of a compromise, in that we made a bunch of chopped salad, gnocchi and meatballs for the whole group, rather than them ordering individual things. But this was perfect for them, since they were famished and just wanted some good, hearty food.

We'd also like to congratulate him on his song winning Collaborative Video of the Year. We knew he deserved it!

Just for fun, here's a cute article that people.com ran on the same story. They've got a running segment called "Caught in the Act", and I guess someone caught Brad at Patsy's that night!

Fighting Hunger with a Taste of the NFL and the New York Jets!

Being that Patsy's is a restaurant, we're always making sure people are well-fed. Every so often, we extend this beyond our customers and do our part to take care of the hungry, homeless, and less fortunate. Of the programs that we're part of, I don't think there are any more exciting than the "Taste of the NFL" ones!

The event was held in the ballroom at the Cipriani Club - the set-up was gorgeous!

If you aren't familiar with the charity, "Taste of the NFL" was started some time ago as a way to bring communities in NFL cities together and help feed the hungry of those cities. The draw of the program is that it combines the greatest, most iconic restaurants of a given city with their favorite football players - you can eat a plate of fresh pasta from Patsy's while chatting it up with Darrell Reavis! As you can imagine, that draws a huge crowd, which in turns raises a tremendous amount of money for the charity. Last night, that meant that Patsy's was teaming up with a bunch of all-stars in the NFL and the restaurant business!

Sal with Darrelle Revis - we took this before things got underway, since there was naturally a huge line to see him one the event got underway
The way the event was set up involved every restaurant "hosting" a Jet. That meant that one of the Jets would hang out near the restaurant's booth, and people could go up and talk to them while grabbing some food. While the big draw of the event is naturally the Jets players, the organization also made sure it had the best restaurants in New York serving everyone dinner.

Sal giving Nick Mangold something to read the next time he's traveling to an away game.

Between silent and live auctions as well as special Jets memorabilia that you could buy and have signed by all the players in attendance, a tremendous amount of money was raised. It'll definitely go a long way to fighting hunger in NYC! The great thing about Taste of the NFL is that it's extending to just about every city with an NFL team. So, if you feel like supporting a great charity while also meeting your favorite football players, you might want to look it up and see when the event's being held near you.

Sal's favorite guests!
All in all, it was a great night that did a lot of good for the city, so we're proud to say we were there, and also humbled that we were included in the organization's opinion of top NYC restaurants. Until next year!
